Duuuuude. A very thinky movie.
I had actually avoided this one because one of our philosophy students lent it to us and said it was very philosophical, and that's WORK. But we finally watched it and I'm glad we did!
For one thing, if the student had said that it opened with significant male nudity including extended shots of man-butt ... that was quite a tasty beginning!
It's also got a wonderful look-and-feel - yes, it's dark, but the architecture and fashions have this fabulous 30's-40's vibe, which was quite unexpected.
The story didn't seem completely thought-out. I didn't find the aliens' motivation or methods plausible, but what they were doing was SO COOL I didn't much care. The ending seemed thrown-together and didn't really take into account, I think, the magnitude of the power and responsibility now vested in the main character.
But still. Seriously cool and thinky movie. Fits in with a lot of existentialist themes - the world as essentially hostile and absurd, and especially how we have no innate essence and must make ourselves who we are. Oh, yeah.
