The Escapade 35 Vid Show served up a delicious platter of fanvids!

I've made what observations and comments I can, but I would thoroughly appreciate any readers who are familiar with canons that I don't know, or don't know fully, jumping in to speak more accurately about works based on Wicked, Starsky & Hutch, Agatha All Along,The Professionals, The Terror, Dark Winds, Fangs of Fortune, Arcane, Heaven Official's Blessing or Our Flag Means Death.

In fact, I would also love to hear from *any* viewer with their own perspective on *any* of these vids!

The slides I made this year are a mixture of shows I really love and want to introduce to potential new fans, (Guardian and Ancient Detective) and shows that were in the vid show for which we didn't already have slides (all the other ones below).

I'm already starting on slides for DC-Slash Con 2025! The next ones I make will be for Sungkyunkwan Scandal; I had made a set using my old computer and didn't back it up to the external hard drive (oops) ... and then the old computer crashed so hard that it lost files I hadn't even written yet, lol.

Ancient Detective (link to another entry; will open in new tab)

Gollum )

The Case Files of Jeweler Richard )

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (focus on Captain America, Tony Stark, and Loki) )

Stargate (focus on SG-1 and SGA) )

White Collar )

Guardian, revamped for legibility & availability )

Here's my report for the fantastic vid show at the virtual Escapade 33.5. I kept a window open and typed up notes while the show was running. A lot of it is still more notes than sentences, but I hope it all makes sense! An asterisk means that the vid premiered at this vid show.

You can watch the vid show online at: https://vimeo.com/showcase/10584452

Certain vids, including all premiering vids, were discussed the next day at the Vid Review Panel; the abbreviation VRP introduces comments that were made by various participants when the vid was discussed and shared here with permission. All other comments are my own. Read more... )

I had marked the VIDS VIDS VIDS panel as a must-see and I'm so glad I did!!! Airawyn coordinated recommendations from Escapade attendees ahead of time and put together a great selection of vids in terms of time (older and newer vids) and space (Western and Asian fandoms) and feels (deeply sad, laugh-out-loud, and many things in between). Kudos to all the vidders for sharing their talent and vision, and to Kerguelen and Aaronantium for tracking them down and inviting them to participate in the show.

At 3 p.m. we had the Gen songvids panel. I had suggested this panel idea and Jan loved it--each panelist brought a favorite vid or two to show and talk about why we loved it.

Con.txt 2018 Vid Show

I thoroughly enjoyed this vid show, not once but twice! I saw it on Friday evening and then, on Saturday, con members could check out a flash drive with all the vids and copy them to their own laptops so we could rewatch them again anytime! I was in vid heaven! I rewatched them with some friends on Saturday night and loved them all over again. There were fewer conventional slash vids than I’m used to seeing, more character-study vids, and lots of grrl power. Great, great stuff.

[ETA]The con has posted a link to watch them all online! http://con-txt.net/index.php/vid-show/[/ETA]

Here's my write-up of the vid show at ConneXions 2017--25 vids' worth of slashy goodness! It's not friendslocked--feel free to share within fandom.

Some initial comments! I will happily sit and watch music videos in fandoms I don't follow, but I can't really review them. For this report, I'll try to say at least something about the vids where I have some limited knowledge of the source material, but this show had a lot of vids in fandoms I didn't even recognize and can't say anything meaningful about. I'd like to issue a challenge to the viewers who ARE familiar with those shows to step up and reward the vidders' efforts with comments!

Here's a link to where you can find most of the vids: ConneXions 2017 Vid Show Playlist.

Tony Stark really is kind of a bastard, isn't he? Black Widow made this one worth watching for me.

Non-spoilery paratextual comments: How many things can go wrong in one theater, especially with only about fifteen people total? Well... The people in front of us wouldn't turn stop checking cell-phone messages; in a dark theater, watching a dark movie, that bright square of blue light right in front of you is incredibly distracting. They ignored our whispered requests to stop, but after my SIL left to get a manager, they finally turned it off. Fortunately she didn't miss much of the movie, but she shouldn't've had to miss any! (The manager never came, but that's another story.) Then some people came in late: a mom and dad who apparently didn't want to pay a babysitter because they brought a one-year-old and a three-year-old, who babbled and talked, respectively, for quite a while; they took them out once and brought them back in, then took them out for good. Meanwhile, the movie itself was jittery; it wasn't obvious until the action slowed down, but then we could tell that the film was moving rapidly back and forth (it was painfully obvious - literally - during the credits) in the projector.

We spoke to the manager afterwards. It turned out that the usher my SIL had talked to had gotten overwhelmed by a busy period and forgot to ask the manager to check on the cellphone user. The poor kid was right there while we were talking to the manager, and looked very embarrassed, and we emphasized that we didn't want him to be reprimanded or anything. We just wanted her to know the situation, and we also told her about the shaky film (we didn't mention the little kids - didn't want to be piling on). She was very understanding and thanked us for being so polite about the whole thing, and insisted on giving us free tickets for another movie AND a complete refund. Wow! We gave the tickets to the SIL, who loves movies and has a hard time affording them.

Enjoyed it a lot! Be sure to stay through the end of the credits - there's an Easter Egg.

Movies

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] pocketwitch, I thought I might start listing what movies I see (kinda parallel to the books thing). Can't promise insightful reviews.

During the past week or two, we've seen:

Impromptu About George Sand & Chopin - this was very enjoyable.
The Tall Guy Fun romantic comedy with Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson. Includes a hilariously bad show-within-a-show, "Elephant!" - a musical based on The Elephant Man. And an awesome up-against-the-walls room-wrecking sex scene.
The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. OMG this SUCKED so bad.
The Curse of Frankenstein: How S-L-O-W can a horror movie go? How can Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing NOT be scary?

As you might be able to tell, we're trying to catch up - there are so many movies we really *ought* to have seen by now!
