At 3 p.m. we had the Gen songvids panel. I had suggested this panel idea and Jan loved it--each panelist brought a favorite vid or two to show and talk about why we loved it.

I got to show the first vid, since I definitely had the first one chronologically. It was a ST III - Snoopy vs the Red Baron by Kandy Fong (although I realized later that I should have used KF’s much clearer digitized version—I forgot I had a copy!) I talked about how I had originally bought the tape it was on back in the early 90’s because it had a Doctor Who vid—which was excellent—but this was the vid I fell in love with. I particularly loved the casting—Lord-Kruge as Baron von Richtoven, yes, Kirk as Snoopy, yes—and the moment Scotty is revealed as the Great Pumpkin is my favorite! I was glad to hear everyone laugh at that moment. I was also delighted that everyone sang along and clapped a lot at the end.

Sentinel - Pacing the Cage by Jamie Ritchey
Jamie brought this one, which was one of hers, a thoughtful character study of Jim that is like reading his mind during moments of frustration with his heightened senses.

SG-1 - By Way of Sorrow by Clucking Belles - Sandy Hereld and Rache Sabotini
Jan brought this one—a study of Daniel that also affirms his role within the team.

Firefly - Hallelujah (Rufus Wainwright)
Another one selected by Jan. I didn’t remember ever seeing it before, but I really liked it. The “she” of the song is Serenity herself, while the “you” is Mal. The opening lines about the secret chord were cast thus: the fourth is Zoe, the fifth is Wash, the minor fall is a scowling Jayne and the major lift is a smiling Kaylee. Most of the vid was mapped less specifically but beautifully in a slow thoughtful build.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Supernatural- selected by Sue
Starts with Dean’s POV and shifts partway through to Sam’s. Each is the other’s “shadow,” so while they have each other, the two of them are very much alone.

I showed Cherry Ice’s “Monsters of the Cosmos” and spoke a little about how it related to the idea that both subhuman and superhuman can be equally dangerous to humans, so even gods can be monsters. I also explained the origin of the music, which is itself a collage of auto-tuned snippets from science shows, a very cool parallel to the collage of clips that make up the video part of fan songvids. I also mentioned how much I liked the emphasis on Science-y!Jane, and Jan observed that it was unusual to see a vid that focused on a female character’s POV — while vidders are usually female and so vids themselves are therefore from a female POV, it’s less common to have a vid from a female *character*’s POV.

Witchblade - Holy Water - Jamie chose this one, which is a favorite of hers, because of the aptness of the song for the fandom as well as the skill with which it was made. It inspired a wave of nostalgia in the room as it turned out several people had watched the series back in the day.

Oh wow Witchblade. I vaguely remember liking it and hating its cancellation though younger me was SO CONFUSED about what that show was about.

[Also, loving your Revelcon report so much!]

I had a panel opposite or I would have been there! Thanks for the notes though. I love reading about vids in any fandom.

Is that ... is that MY vid?

I had a remaster of it, but I lost in a HD crash, so if whoever put it in the vid show has it I'd love if you could shoot me a copy.

Thank you! I get asked about that vid all the time and I don't have a copy - YouTube won't let it post at all - and if I ever put it on Vimeo, I've forgotten where (lol)
