Things had always come easily to Ambrose.
Especially his mind, with its keen and dazzling intelligence. He felt like a cheater as he breezed through the hardest subjects; his service to the Queen felt more like play.
He'd never had to work for anything in his life.
When Raw drew out the long-suppressed memories of Ambrose's capture and debrainment, the others were moved by his sacrifice, and the terror and sorrow they thought he felt. Strangely, what he remembered was a thrill of accomplishment, as if he had, for the first time, done something worth doing.
Finally, something was hard.
