Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I take a great notion
To jump into the river and drown.

Well, Irene, good-night, Irene, good-night
Good night, Irene, good night, Irene
I'll see you in my dreams.

--Good Night, Irene (by Leadbelly - thanks to [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick for the attribution!)

I'd noticed the episode title, "Sometimes a Great Notion," when the new BSG episode first popped up on the TiVo's list of programs to record ten days ago, and even got the song stuck in my head for a couple of days. Then I forgot. When I saw the episode again--okay, a well-chosen title.

Lots of cool stuff this ep, but very sad, too. I like the mystery with Kara. Leoben being freaked out added an interesting layer. TODS figured out that Dualla was going to kill herself; I was startled but I can't say I was completely surprised. The scene where she finds the jacks and starts picking them up like you do when you play the game reminded me of the recurring nightmare of the children on the playground in Terminator 2.

Um. very minor point: not Eileen.

The song is "Good Night, Irene", by Leadbelly.

That's sad. Regrettably, I haven't been watching BSG at all, but from what I've read about it in EW magazine, I've been missing a whole lot. Showing the reactions of the characters to finding Earth is a great idea.

I'm enjoying BSG, but at the same time it's something of a downer. Week after week you come to love these characters and then they *suffer* so terribly!

Thank you for the music reference explained. It also explains the film made so long ago called, "Sometimes A Great Notion" with Paul Newman. It was based on a Ken Kesey novel. In that film a man drowns in a horrible manner so the song makes all the more sense to me now. That was a long standing question for me so I will give you something as a thank you in case you need it in a trivia battle; that was the first film shown on HBO. I think at that time HBO might still have been known as Channel 100.

This BSG was a study in the shift of power. Once the cylons became "mortal" they began to lose their imperious tone. Evidently they have the ability to be afraid but nothing scared them before because they could not cease to exist. Mortality seems to have pulled back that curtain at last. Leoben's reaction was all the more startling since he had been the puppet master with Kara for so long. Now he is afraid of her. It was very, very satisfying.

Heh, heh, heh.

Yes, when Dee picked up the jacks I also thought of Terminator 2! I also knew then that she was not going to continue living.

you are being kind in calling it something of a downer. It is getting to the place it is almost masochistic to watch it.

I don't think I know that song; I wouldn't have gotten that connection. I might have to download that ...

It sounds like there's some good writing going on, then.
