REVELcon 2018: Vid Show

So many great vids this year! Kudos to all the vidders, and to Jamie for bringing it all together.

The first five vids were gen, beginning with "My Code" by Holdt, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I hadn't heard the song before, but I was impressed with how the lyrics fit Tony Stark like a glove, and seemed to give his character a level of self-understanding behind his brash behavior.

Kat-byrd's "A Fire Is Burning" was a driving, tension-filled exploration of the dark and violent world in which Starsky and Hutch frequently find themselves. I really liked the way the vidder began the vid with two alternating scenes for the opening sections, and also the use she made of instrumental breaks.

The next song, "Middle of the Night" by Holdt, blew me away. I don't know the fandom, which was Legion, but it the vid was brilliantly unsettling. The eerie, choppy imagery fit the industrial-style music, as did the vidder's use of a variety of different kinds of footage.

Jamie Ritchey's Sentinel vid, called "Jim Plays Chicken with a Train" and set to a catchy country song, was sheer delight. Not only was it fun, it was also well crafted: I admired so many details such as the way she had a car going bump on just the right beat, the way she incorporated a single line of dialogue at the end to wrap up a mini-arc within the vid, and the way she edited the song to keep the vid short and snappy. (She did such a smooth job editing the song that I just thought she had found the perfect length song—I learned later that she had actually trimmed it quite a bit.)

One meta thought that occurred to me after Jamie's vid was that the kind of action scenes she used to hilarious effect in "Jim Plays Chicken with a Train" were similar to the action scenes that Kat-byrd used in "A Fire Is Burning" to portray an intense, serious perspective. It's amazing—and impressive—how vidders contextualize the source material to create a narrative, a mood, a point.

I was very much looking forward to the next vid, by classic vidder Mary Van Deusen, a Deep Space Nine vid to the Jackson Browne double song, "The Load Out/Stay." But … I couldn't love it. My notes are a mess as I tried to figure out what the vid's story was; I couldn't find a throughline to make sense of the whole experience. I remembered the song from when it played on the radio, and I didn't dislike it, but it was very long. Perhaps it's more of a living room vid and will make more sense upon re-viewing; I didn't find it worked well as a vid show vid.

The next 9 vids were slash, and more goodness ensued!

"L'amour Toujours" by T'Lara was a K/S vid juxtaposing parallel clips from TOS (including movies) and AOS in subtle and effective ways and interspersing gentle moments of humor throughout. The vidder also used some interesting special effects, including a startling but pretty kaleidoscopic effect that visually echoed the quirky synthesizer music during instrumental bits.

The next vid was "Monsters," a Jack/Daniel SG-1 vid by Holdt that made exceptionally good use of selected lyrics on the screen, well-chosen for emphasis on lines such as "someone you can trust."

A Star Trek: TOS vid by T'Lara & Rhaegal focusing on Spock and entitled "The Private Life of Vulcans" followed, in which it appeared that David Attenborough was narrating Spock's courtship rituals. It was side-splittingly funny! The vid was unusual in setting its clips to a spoken-word recording rather than a musical piece; also, I was impressed at how the vidders were able to blend in the original background music from the Star Trek clips along with the spoken-word soundtrack.

In "Any Time At All," kat-byrd shows Bodie apparently communicating reassurance to Doyle by phone. It was really rather sweet and I enjoyed it a lot.

I couldn't follow the next one, "No One Is Alone" by Diana Williams, because I'm not at all familiar with Big Eden. My impression was that it was a touching story about acceptance. There was lots of crying. In the vid, I mean, not among the audience.

The next vid, by kat-byrd, featured Starsky & Hutch to the tune of "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw." It began with funny credits that set the humorous tone, which carried successfully through the vid. The vidder edited the song for length so that it never dragged and was enjoyable throughout.

"Gad-eshu'a," by T-Lara, came next, set to the song "Showbiz" by Muse. It was a dark, thinky K/S vid (TOS) that appeared to begin with a framing device and then take place chiefly in Spock's memories. I googled the title, which was not explained in the vid, and found an explanation from the vidder about its meaning in Vulcan ("daymare," like a waking nightmare) as well as her explanation of what the vid was about. I definitely want to watch it again after reading that! But I was glad I had a chance to see it without the official description.

Holdt's vid "Like Hell" came next, offering a slow build/slow burn approach to Steve/Bucky. She did really interesting things with blending color, shifting to black & white, as well as using a split screen in places and interpolating what appeared to be moments from gay erotica. It did not come across as gimmicky; instead, it highlighted the massive changes that each character has endured as well as its effect on their difficult relationship.

Finally, T'Lara's ST:TOS vid, "The 12 Gays of XXXmas," provided the show with a stupendous finale. The song itself was a hilarious and definitely NSFW filk of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," and the clip choices were sharp and sassy . The reaction-shot clips during the instrumental tidbits between verses were spot-on. The graphics throughout were super clever as were the credits at the end. Everyone that I saw left the show with big smiles on their faces!

Sure thing! The passwords for each vid should be underneath the vid frames. :)
