Wizard Rock Day!
Oct. 30th, 2007 09:52 amYay! It's Wizard Rock Day! Visit http://theemdash.livejournal.com/597849.html to read more about it.
Here are my ten favorite Wrock songs - well, so far, anyway!
I lost my copy of RipEditBurn when my computer crashed, and I haven't learned another way to create mp3's - if there's a quick and easy way that someone can tell me, I'll add mp3's to the post. For right now, though, just the songs.
In no particular order:
1. Expecto Patronum by Remus and the Lupins: the Wizard Rock song that got me hooked! Charming & catchy synth-pop with a maddeningly contagious chorus.
2. It's Not Half Bad by the Parselmouths: a discourse on the advantages of being in Slytherin by a group with two things I love, attitude and tight harmony. The "ew!" at the mention of Snape is adorable.
3. Hermione Screws up the Polyjuice Potion by Harry and the Potters: my favorite of their mini-songs with a very cool backbeat reminiscent of "She Came From Planet Claire" and a mid-century-modern flavor.
4. The 7th Horcrux by the Remus Lupins: Gloomy, literate lyrics and a great guitar riff: what's not to like?
5. Slytherin Don't Dance by the Remus Lupins: Off-kilter blend with a traditional rock'n'roll chorus and avant-garde verses that remind me vaguely of Gang of Four. It took a few listens before I got hooked - thoroughly.
6. The Happiest Day by Ginny and the Heartbreakers: I don't know why this works so well for me, but it does; I think what makes it so appealing is the strain of melancholy behind lyrics that would otherwise be too sweet.
7. Trevor the Toad by Roonil Wazlib: A quirky tribute to Neville's companion. Made me stop and think.
8. Evil is Sexy by Voldemort: Awesome heavy-metal growling and screeching. I love the parallelisms in the verses and the scream of "Imperio--KISS ME!" ending each chorus.
9. Flushed by the Moaning Myrtles: I love the variety of genres you find in Wizard Rock; these girls sound like some sort of honky-tonk act to me, and I love them to bits. Here's one of their cheery songs about being dead! The goofy "ba-da-ba-da" backup on the chorus makes me giggle.
10. He Didn't Do It by the Moaning Myrtles: The idea is great - a frustrated Myrtle *knows* Hagrid isn't guilty but can't help him - the melody is catchy, the harmonies soar, and the piano rolls and thunders.
