In honor of meritahut and her amazing fabulous comic strip set in Ancient Rome, SPQR Blues.

I did not create a hostile learning environment in class today.

We were going over English-to-Latin exercises on the board. I was leading them through it this time (last time I made them go over them in small groups & put the consensus on the board). So we get to "Dido gives a dinner for the Trojans" and of course we started with our verb (dat) and our subject (Dido) and our direct object (cenam) and then I said, "What case do we put the Trojans in?"

And I resisted the very very strong temptation that suddenly came over me to say, "NOT your wallet!" And I kept a perfectly straight face. So I am very proud of myself.

My journal doesn't have a name or a subtitle or a special name for the friends page... "Amedia" is my slash writing pseud and I have gblvr's piccy of Legolas & Gimli as my default icon because (a) it's gorgeous and (b) it was my fave OTP when I started my LJ.

So I'm going to substitute the Latin!Geek explanation for the name of my 'netfic page.

I was into Emergency! when I wrote my first netfic. As many of you know, the hospital in Emergency! is called Rampart. In the Rolfe Humphries translation of Lucretius' De Rerum Natura ("On the Nature of Things," which he spiffily translates "The Way Things Are"), he translates "flammantia moenia mundi" as "the flaming ramparts of the world." I was reading Lucretius with an Advanced Latin student that semester, and thought, "flaming ramparts, heh, heh. What a great name for a collection of Emergency! slash!" Fortunately I did not say this aloud to my poor student. [One Latin student pimped into slash (pocketwitch) is enough! OK, I had littlewings04 in Latin, too, but she found slash independently.]
