"I'm sorry, Ahamo," said the Queen. "This is the only way."

"I understand," he said, bending to kiss the sleeping DG's forehead. "I'll be gone when you get back from Milltown. I'll remember the plan. I won't let you down."

The Queen's eyes were shining with unshed tears. "Hush, my love. Don't speak kindly to me." She bit her lower lip. "I'll fall apart."

Impulsively he turned and took her in his arms, burying his face in her cascade of silver curls. "No, you won't. You'll come through, I know you will," he whispered. "You're the strongest of us all."
