Note: Response to the tinman100 challenge to incorporate the line of dialogue "What is that thing?" Originally posted here.

"What is this thing?"

"It's a model of the periodic table," Ambrose said, gently redirecting a pudgy little hand away from the delicate structure.

"What is that thing?"

"When it's done, it will be a device for channeling certain types of magical power."

"What is that thing?"

"DG, honey, don't you have anything else to do?"

"Like what, Mr. Ambrose?"

"It's beautiful outside. You could pick apples. Skip stones. Explore the caves. Thread the maze."

"Caves?" The little girl wandered out of the laboratory, leaving its myriad dangers behind. "Mommy never said there were caves! Az! Azkadellia! Let's go exploring!"

Well, I figured, even when she's maddening, she's also cute, and he really is fond of her.
