I have a friend who wants to have his own domain - he doesn't have dreams of becoming a master webhost or anything, he just wants his website to be www.hisownname.com instead of yahoo.com/hisname or whatever.

Can anyone recommend a good company through which to acquire one's own domain? Can anyone steer him away from BAD companies from which one should *not* attempt to acquire a domain?

Thanks in advance for any help!

A propos of the question I asked [livejournal.com profile] pocketwitch, who also recommended a service - do you have your site hosted at the same place where you get your domain name, or can you have it hosted someplace different?

You can have it hosted anywhere you like. I use the wonderful Mr. Bill at: http://www.ccsconsultants.com/hostingservices.shtml

No down time, quick and speedy responses to questions, and wonderful pricing. Fan friendly too!

I'm a big fan of dotster.com. I'd recommend avoiding register.com - they're expensive for no apparent reason.

Much thanks!

Both dotster.com and directnic.com charge about $15/year for the domain name, I notice. Dotster has a discount for multiple years, which is cool, but for some reason they charge a lot more for webhosting ($10/month vs. $15/year).

Do you have to host your site at the same service that you get the domain name from?

Nope. In fact, I use warped.com for all my hosting needs. $5/month per domain (between me & Em, we've got 3).
