I like "gen/shippy gen/slash" as a way to bring in one part of the audience without driving off the other. Readers can be so, so nervous about getting a story that's "not what they bargained for," I'm sure that makes people overly cautious and avoid potential good reads. If you explain on the site that by "shippy gen" you mean explores a close relationship between friends/rivals/what-have-you, hopefuly everyone who stops by will read into it that it's something both safe and interesting.
Not sure I'm making a whole bucket of sense, here. It's only 3pm and it's already a long day :D

It's like you're reading my mind - that's exactly the pitfall I'm trying to avoid! I wound up settling on "Gen, emphasis on Cain-Glitch friendship, can be read as slashy or not" because of a discussion on ohzeebooks that made it clear that the definition of "ship" is still up in the air.
And I would be honored if you would read any of my Tin Man stuff - in your copious spare time, of course!
I did know the LJ name of your son. I did not know his real name for a while and when I finally saw it then I talked to PW and it all came together. Very cool!
This made me think about how I scan for things to read! What makes me click on something, which I've never really pondered before. I think first I'm scanning for pairing. (some variant on Glitch and-or Ambrose/Wyatt) Then I might skim over the summary, and the rating. For my own fic, I think, if I recall, that I list pairings as I saw them while writing the fic. So if in my mind, I felt it was G/W, even if it could be seen as gen, I'd still list it G/W. Ones that could be seen as vaguely shippish OR gen I didn't list as a pairing, though. But I feel if someone is so averse to slash they don't want even the allusion to it in a gen piece, they probably should not be on my lj, hehe!
Thinky thoughts! Yay! I found this very insightful.

*nodnod* That totally makes sense to me.
I see things as slashy onscreen in the miniseries that were probably intended as gen, so there are some pieces I've written that probably aren't any slashier than the miniseries and could be taken as gen, but in MY mind, they were meant to be slash. But if a genner could enjoy them too, the more the merrier!

LOL! Tru dat! Then again, yours is the kind of fic that could pull someone *into* slash. :-)
