MOONSTONE BOOKS KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER TP VOL 1
JUL04 3022, p304, $17.95
All right, I'll bite. Are there really KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER fans out there who are buying this? Is there some huge fan base for this character that I've never known about? Don't get me wrong, I know there's an award given out for "Best Barney Miller Slash Fiction" every year, so stranger things certainly exist, but I don't know, I just can't see how Moonstone is making back the money on the license here, to say nothing of the printing bill. Who's buying this? Is there an audience? What's going on? Anyone?
(I am not making up the Barney Miller slash fiction award, incidentally. I'm not sure which part surprised me more, that there was an award or that there's enough Barney Miller slash fiction still being written every year that it can be a viable category in fan-fiction awards.)
I really ought to write to the poor guy and explain that the award was only given once, because the only year (so far) that there have been enough Barney Miller stories in printzines to have a category was 2002; hence there was an award given out in 2003 (the awards are given the year after the stories are published). There was a Barney Miller story on the ballet the previous year, but it received an Honorable Mention, which is what the Fan Q's do if a story receives enough nominations to be on the ballot but there aren't enough stories to make a category.
At any rate, though, I'm tickled pink by the mention. Does this mean our tiny corner of fandom has Made The Big Time???!!!

Date: 2004-10-05 07:24 pm (UTC)Although - come to think of it, Henry Jenkins quoted a Barney Miller slash story in _Textual Poachers_, in the chapter on slash cliches IIRC. Which was where that story ("A Suspicious Commodity" in Dyad 2) belonged (meow! - but it was really bad IMHO).
