We forced ourselves to slog through it. We watched a chunk yesterday, interspersed with a TV rerun of Serenity, which was, of course, a hundred times better.
Yes! If you have avoided this movie, you have saved something more valuable than the rental fee - an hour and forty-four minutes of your precious time! :-)
I was yelling at Kathy Bates, "Run, Get Out Now, Save Yourself!!!!"
LOL! I was saying to TODS about halfway through the movie, that even though her character's not particularly sympathetic, she's complex and interesting: at first she seems paranoid but then we realize that she's savvy about history and how patterns repeat, and she learns quickly as situations change. And I felt she brought an energy and a sense of intelligence that were sadly missing from the rest of the movie (except for the few minutes with John Cleese).
Then toward the end they had to have her do something stupid and out of character in order to move the creaking machinery of the plot where they wanted to force it to go. What a waste.
I even felt bad for GORT! I mean, what's the sense of having a spiffy shiny robot o' doom who does, essentially, nothing? No, we have to have scary metal eating CGI cicadas *yawn*.
If you want to get the taste of vile out of your system, you could watch the remake of "Andromeda Strain" with Benjamin Bratt. Oh, wait, I forgot: it makes the new "Day the Earth Stood Still" look like genius! At least "Day the Earth Stood Still" only sucks up 104 minutes of your life, while "Andromeda Strain" accent on "Strain", robs you of 174 minutes....
B. and I have successfully avoided the new one. Glad you've confirmed our opinion, based on the preview we saw. Life's too short to watch bad movies! *hugs* to you and TODS for your valiant behavior toward the film!

Don't you know that's why they are re-doing those old movies, to make them "better" ?
