Hubby wants to get me a laserdisc player for Christmas, because I want one. (He got me a DVD burner for my birthday - he knows his Geek!Wife very well.)

Can anyone offer advice on a good brand to buy? Bad brands to avoid? I was planning to get one on eBay; does anyone know a better source?

As a laserdisc owner, I have found this site helpful:

I have only ever had this one laserdisc player. We have been very happy with it - if you want to know the model/make, I'll be glad to get that info for you (it's currently at my ex-husband's house - we share custody of it. *g*).

No advice on brand names, really, but advice on the discs themselves - they degrade over time, just be aware of that. We had a laserdisc player when I was growing up, and by the time I left the nest a good amount of the discs were in pretty bad condition.

That would be really appreciated, if you wouldn't mind - I don't want to cause you stress by being the occasio for an unpleasant contact.

That is handy to know. My big dream is to get the original SW trilogy in widescreen and then dub it off onto recordable DVD's. That way I can have the original version on DVD without Lucas's "corrections," so there, neener neener neener. :-)

Then I'm told that Rat Patrol is available on laserdisc from Japan. [drool drool] It's not out in any professional form in the US, partly, I suspect, because nobody knows who owns the rights (lo-o-o-o-ng story).

This has nothing to do with y'all playing Frisbee with them, does it? ;-)

No problem, we talk every day. We're still friends. I'll find out and let you know.

Ah, if you do that, you should be fine, then. I just wouldn't recommend considering the laserdisc itself to be a permanent archive.

WE ONLY DID THAT ONCE!
