kseda said recently that the world would be a nicer place with more boykissing. So this is my little contribution to making the world a better place to live in. :-) Also posted here.
Ambrose's rebrainment went more smoothly than anyone expected, but then long days passed while his friends waited for him to wake up. "Doctor," DG asked one day, speaking for the anxious little group gathered at Ambrose's bedside, "what's wrong?"
"I don't know," said the chief surgeon. "All of his vital signs are normal and the brainwave readings continue to demonstrate successful integration. I don't know why he hasn't awakened."
Raw glanced at the doctor and, receiving a nod, stepped forward and lightly touched Ambrose's face. After a moment, the Viewer shook his head and stepped back. "Cannot read him yet." He thought for a long moment and frowned. "Maybe dreaming, deep down inside ... perhaps does not realize he's not awake."
Cain wondered what Ambrose might be dreaming about. Certainly not the same dreams that Cain had had since they met, dreams that left him sweating and spent and swearing never to reveal feelings that couldn't possibly be returned.
Like the dream he'd had last night. He and Ambrose had been running, laughing, through the labyrinth at Finaqua. Cain had lost sight of Ambrose momentarily and stopped, looking around, until his friend jumped out from behind the nearest hedge, tackling Cain and bringing him down to the ground. Ambrose pinned him against the sweet-scented earth, warm from the summer sun, and kissed him, still laughing, until Cain had rolled them both over and...
Cain blinked. Raw was staring at him; the Viewer would never read another's mind without permission, of course, but Cain had a feeling he had been unintentionally broadcasting on a restricted frequency. He looked away, embarrassed.
Raw turned to DG and the surgeon. "I have an idea," he said hesitantly. "Would like to discuss privately with Cain for a few minutes."
Cain felt a surge of relief that Raw was not going to share Cain's feelings with the others, and simultaneous embarrassment as he wondered what Raw would say when the others left.
Raw said nothing. He reached out, patted Cain's shoulder, and smiled. Cain sensed a quiet wave of reassurance, tempered with a gentle ... humor? Raw thought this was funny? What did Raw know that Cain didn't? Cain looked down at Ambrose, back at Raw, and put two and two together. Finally, Raw thought at him.
Then Raw spoke aloud. "I think you know how to wake him up." He smiled and left the room.
