amedia: (Old School Songvids)

I was very pleased to be asked to provide another hour's worth of older vids for this year's REVELcon! Here's a list of the vids I showed, with comments, because I am so impressed by these vidders that I have to show them love! Since I was asked to focus on small fandoms, I wanted to find fun, high-energy vids that people would find entertaining even if they didn't know the fandom. I also threw in a few not-so-small fandoms like Star Trek, Sentinel, and Pros.

Disc 1

Song ~~ Fandom ~~ Vidder
It's Raining Men ~~ Multi ~~ Dementia Ink
Lots of mid-90's fandoms in a fun high-energy vid focusing on … what else? Attractive men!

Men ~~ Horatio Hornblower ~~ Clucking Belles
Speaking of attractive men … the song itself is naughty and definitely a tad bit slashy, and the vid fits it gloriously well. Does it include a shot of a nekkid Ioan Gruffydd taking his shower on-deck? Heck yes! Two notes: 1. It was actually TODS's idea to include this one, because he loves it. 2. This is the only computer vid in the show; the others were all made on VCRs.

Theme Song ~~ Twin Peaks ~~ Bunnies from Hell (Judy Chien)
Clips from Twin Peaks to the tune of the theme song from The Addams Family. It works frighteningly well. I really liked the conversation I overheard while I was showing it: "This makes as much sense as the original show did!" "Actually, it makes MORE sense than the original show did!"

You Can Call Me Al ~~ Quantum Leap ~~ California Crew (Sterling Eidolan & the Odd Woman In)
Another hit out of the park for California Crew. This song has a lot of instrumental passages and they did a great job setting clips to them. There was also some nifty mapping; I didn't notice until the third or fourth time I saw it, but every time Paul Simon says "You can be my bodyguard," we see someone (usually Sam) walk right through Al. Very nice continuity.

Hi Diddle Dee Dee ~~ Wild Wild West ~~ Deejay Driscoll & Jessica
A tribute to Artemus Gordon to the song from Pinocchio. Really brings out the delight that Artie takes in his many performances.

Theme Song ~~ Highlander ~~ Central Consortium (Jenny)
Brilliantly twisted. In other words, a Jenny vid. The clips are from the arc involving the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and the theme song is from The Monkees.

Abracadabra ~~ due South ~~ Chicago Loop (Waldo)
Waldo made some really clever clip choices here—I remember someone on a listserv mentioning how brilliant her choice was for the line "black panties with an angel's face" and when I finally got to see it, I had to agree.

Macho Man ~~ Garrison's Gorillas ~~ Jackie Edwards
Yummy, yummy guys. And the way Jackie incorporates a shot of each of the five guys with split-second timing on the "hey! hey! hey hey hey!" leading into the refrain every single time is masterful.

Another One Bites the Dust ~~ Star Trek TOS ~~ Graeme Cree
If I tell you that watching a whole bunch of people die for three and a half minutes straight was actually loads of fun, you might look at me askance … but it's true! The song is all about those poor redshirts. Graeme told me when he was researching clips for the vid that "Obsession" and "The Apple" were tied for the most deaths, but "The Apple" was more distinctive because every redshirt died differently.

Disc 2

Song ~~ Fandom ~~ Vidder
Nothing Like a Dame ~~ Multi ~~ California Crew
Lots of clips of guys in drag, cleverly set to the lyrics. In addition to the expected TV sources like M*A*S*H* and Bosom Buddies, we got Dustin Hoffman from Tootsie, Robin Williams (from Mrs. Doubtfire, possibly) and Bob Hope!

Mungojerry & Rumpleteazer ~~ Blakes 7 ~~ Mary Van Deusen
Avon and Vila acting like a mischievous pair of troublesome cats. Perfect!

Close to You ~~ X-Files ~~ Chicago Loop (Jessica & Amanda
A droll video that plays against the lyrics very entertainingly. My favorite moment is the frogs falling down from the sky for the line about stars.

Don't Put it in your Mouth ~~ Pros ~~ Deejay Driscoll
The song itself is a hoot, a compilation of all the clichés uttered by frustrated moms everywhere. Casting Cowley sometimes as the exasperated parent and sometimes as the bad-example father might not work in a serious video, but it was hilarious here.

Go West ~~ Shanghai Noon ~~ sockii
Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan are utterly adorable in this movie, and the vid concentrates the adorableness. And, of course, the slashiness!

Rump Shaker ~~ due South ~~ Dementia Ink
Let's all watch Fraser in motion! Yum.

The Man Song ~~ Sentinel ~~ Media Cannibals (Sandy, Jo, & Rache)
Another hilarious song in which Jim proclaims himself completely Blair-whipped, with the clips to prove it.

It's Hard To Be Humble ~~ Battlestar Galactica 78 ~~ Deejay Driscoll & Kandy Fong
A hilarious tribute to Starbuck that fits his character quite well indeed.

Let's Call the Whole Thing Off ~~ Babylon 5 ~~ Dementia Ink
In case you don't recognize the title, this is the "You say po-tay-to, I say po-tah-to" song, and it fits the bickering Londo and G'Kar like a slashy glove.

Smut ~~ Multi/Meta ~~ Mary Van Deusen
A meta-multi vid that interpolates not only footage of actual fans, but also clips from what looks like a gay porn movie. The fannish source clips are hilariously matched to the lyrics, too.

Is there any place vids get posted besides YouTube? I understand YouTube's policies are changing to insert more ads the more one watches.
