Zhao Yunlan got the tea things ready and put the kettle on to boil. As he came out of the kitchen area into his living room, he stopped short in astonishment.
The previous week, he had been interviewing a witness at their home and noticed that the house next door was having a yard sale. He sauntered over, glanced at a few items, and spotted a baggy old purplish sweater that looked warm and clean and comfortable. Best of all, he was able to buy it with the change in his pocket.
The weather was about to turn cool, and something like this would be good for evenings at home. Shen Wei probably wouldn't approve, but Zhao Yunlan figured he could sweet-talk his way past any objections.He took the sweater home and tossed it on the couch, where it promptly became Da Qing's favorite spot to curl up for a snooze.
And now, Shen Wei, wearer of collar stays, arm garters, and everything crisp, was wearing the sweater. Zhao Yunlan gaped. He thought Shen Wei's most dramatic transformation was surely the Black Cloaked Envoy, but no. The Envoy was, after all, very neatly put together. Shen Wei in a comfy old sweater was like a completely different person.
"Wherever did you find this?" Shen Wei asked. "It's perfect! Is it for me?"
Zhao Yunlan stood and smiled at this fuzzy new version of Shen Wei, yet another Shen Wei to love. "It is now," he said.
Shen Wei looked down at the sweater, running his hands over the well-worn knit. "Aw, look," he said. "You even got Da Qing to pre-season it. There's nothing like claw marks and cat hair to add that personal touch." He looked up at Zhao Yunlan with a soft smile. "What do you think? How do I look in it?"
Zhao Yunlan held up a finger. "Just a minute," he said. He went back into the kitchen and turned off the burner under the kettle, then returned. "You look so good in it that all I can think about is taking it off you," he said, and pounced.
