Tom Lehrer has this joke as part of the routine introducing one of his songs, where he says sarcastically that it takes a lot of courage for folksingers to go into coffeehouses and sing about love and peace. :-)
It really did take a hell of a lot of courage to be an out lesbian at a lockstep-conservative college, though, and I've always admired you for that. You are truly brave when it comes up to standing up for what you believe. You've also been a kind and loyal friend, and I'm so very glad you've kept in touch.
Thank you so much. Being out at SU was far, far easier for me than being closeted would have been, honestly. I've never been good at keeping secrets about myself.
I'm very glad we've kept in touch, too. Not only are you one of the very best teachers I've ever had in my entire schooling career, but you're one of the most interesting and fun and funny people ever. :D
I'll play, though I don't know if I'll get around to posting it in mine.
No prob!
I'm inspired by your intensity, how very much you care about your writing and the people in your life. Someone as good a writer as you or as dedicated a homeschooler (to give just two examples) could easily fall into the trap of complacency, but you are always re-examining, re-evaluating, and forging ahead. You remind me of one of my favorite quotes from Ursula LeGuin, from The Lathe of Heaven: "Love has to be made new every day, like bread.
