1) What was the first CD/Record/Album/Artist you ever bought and what format was it in? (Vinyl/Cassette/CD/MP3 Download)?

I think the first single I ever bought myself was "Cherish" by the Association - I was maybe 10 years old at the time. I still have it. It's a vinyl 45.

I also bought myself a Partridge Family album (vinyl LP) at some point 5th or 6th grade. I didn't really start buying records in earnest until high school, when I started off with (cringe) the Bay City Rollers. Then I think I got something by Jefferson Starship for Christmas that year - the bright red one with "Miracles" on it, whatever that was called. And Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. I still love early-to-mid Elton John. And it snowballed from there.

2) How do you usually listen to music? (iPod/Walkman/Stereo/Radio)

At work, I listen to a lot of music on the computer; at home, often from the iPod, which I have have hooked up to speakers - I'm getting WAY more than my $40 worth out of them - it's SO convenient! We still use the stereo, for playing CD's when we're downstairs, or for playing records. I mostly listen to the radio in the car.

3) What is your favorite genre of music and why?

I don't think I can begin to say. I like a lot of different genres! Classical rock (I mean, stuff like Yes), glam rock, hard rock... new wave, postpunk, light rap, folk music, broadway musicals, G&S, new age... some types of jazz.

I used to hate country music, but I'm finding more and more of it that I like.

I don't like most classical music, which makes me a Philistine. :-(

And I have a huge thing for Christmas music of just about every kind. But not yet!

4) What is your opinion on music video shows and music television?

I wish they would show freakin' MUSIC VIDEOS instead of those idiotic reality shows all the time! I love music videos!

5) Do you usually agree with who the winners of the Grammy Awards are?

I don't usually even know who they are!

1) What was the first CD/Record/Album/Artist you ever bought and what format was it in? (Vinyl/Cassette/CD/MP3 Download)?

I joined the BMG record club at one point and got all those vinyl albums for penny. The selection included Styx, Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and others I can no longer recall.

2) How do you usually listen to music? (iPod/Walkman/Stereo/Radio)
I listen to CD's alot in the car and on my computer. The hubby bought me wireless headphones and I think they were the best thing ever. I adore them and now I can walk all over the house and biddy bop to my tunage.

Sometimes I'll listen to MP3's on my PDA, but not so much.

3) What is your favorite genre of music and why?

Rock, definately. It might be because that's what I grew up on. I do vary between popular and hard though. And depending on my mood I'll listen to a variety of things.

4) What is your opinion on music video shows and music television?

Too much sex and what are those people smoking. The last music video I adored was OK GO, "Let's Go."

5) Do you usually agree with who the winners of the Grammy Awards are?

I don't usually even know who they are! I agree with that. But I do like the music awards, especially the ones on MTV because I get to listen to a snippet of a band's music I might not hear otherwise. And if I like it I go download like mad. Between that and exchanging with others I have more ripped CD's than regular.

I used to drool over those ads!

Ah. The giants, as Mr. Spock would say. :-)

I can walk all over the house and biddy bop to my tunage.

There's a wonderful expression, and a great mental image, too!

1) What was the first CD/Record/Album/Artist you ever bought and what format was it in? (Vinyl/Cassette/CD/MP3 Download)?

Geez, I have no idea.

I'm old enough, of course, that it was vinyl.

I remember winning a Rolling Stones 45 when I was -- 8. I still have it, somewhere. Wait, no, I do remember. I bought Winchester Cathedral and my father bought a record player for me to play it on. And then I bought Who Will Answer... I can't help it. I had maudlin tastes in music. I still do.

2) How do you usually listen to music?

I refuse to buy an iPod until Apple makes the price truly reasonable, (and until they make the things truly rechargeable for unlimited times and AFAIK they haven't yet) and because I have some sort of perverse resistance to popular things. I used to listen to a number of things on the Walkman, but the Discman still ruins CDs and uses too many batteries for me. So most of the time I play CDs while writing and I always have the radio or a CD on in the car. When I'm in the mood, I play classical music at work, figuring this is less likely to annoy my nearby coworkers (and because it covers up my coworker Rob's tendency to play annoying CNN-commentators who talk much too loudly and too fast).

3) What is your favorite genre of music and why?

I don't have a favorite. I have favorite singers and favorite composers.

I listen to a lot of old rock and pop, a lot of eighties stuff, and a lot of classical. I don't regard myself as any sort of a classical maven -- most of what I like is romantic or baroque (if it's really baroque, then you should fix it... ;-)] and is entirely based on my mood at the moment.

I don't like rap, and I don't like hip-hop, and it took me years to figure out why. The rhythm sounds wrong to my ears, like someone singing off-key. And the profanity is so much like a verbal tic that it irritates me.

4) What is your opinion on music video shows and music television?

I loved videos in the eighties and the early nineties. They don't play enough of them any more -- I like videos that try to show or tell stories.

5) Do you usually agree with who the winners of the Grammy Awards are?

I don't usually even know who they are! Ditto, I'm afraid.

Winchester Cathedral!!! I *loved* that song - bought the single when I was in college (it was an oldie then).

My first record player was a hand-me-down that I got from my big sister when I was a freshman in high school. I was so thrilled to have it! I had one of those closets that runs the length of the room, so I set it up *in* the closet with one speaker at each end to get maximum separation - crucial for listening to Bohemian Rhapsody properly.

We got an iPod free when we bought a new Mac - otherwise, yeah, they're still *way* too expensive. (So are Macs, but we hadn't bought a new one since 1995, so we figure we got our money's worth.)
