I need to post a response to all the very kind people who replied to my last post, and I will - but right now, I have a very time-sensitive question!

Y'all know I have been tending sourdough starter and tonight I actually mixed the batter and I have four loaves baking even as we speak. However... while I was out buying ingredients I bought a new box of baking soda and I also bought a box of kitty litter deodorizer of the same brand in a very similar box.

I think you can guess what happened.

There's no poison warning on the box or on the Arm & Hammer website, and it only went into two of the loaves before I realized the mistake; unfortunately I can't tell which two. TODS thinks we should just bake them all, taste them, and throw out the two yucky-tasting ones - if indeed they even taste yucky.

Advice? Suggestions?

ETA: I did wind up throwing them out, although it was hard to resist keikokin's suggestion of testing them on a student.

I think TODS's suggestion sounds solid, since there's no poison warning. Does the deodorizer box have any sort of ingredients list? Do we know what actually went into those loaves?

There's no ingredients list, but I found an epinions review of the product that says it's mostly baking soda (and therefore vastly overpriced). Arm & Hammer's website says that it's "96% odor-fighting ingredients including genuine ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda as well as a specially formulated moisture-activated fragrance." It also has stuff to keep it flowing & not caking, but so does just about everything, so I'm not gonna worry.

There was half a teaspoon in that batch - that's a quarter-teaspoon in each loaf. So I'm hoping it winds up being a non-issue.

Thanks for the response!

*ROTFLMAO* Wow, its true the stuff in TEXAS is stronger! LOL. Wait until I tell the Map Bitch. OMG honey! I would think that two of them would smell perfume-like. WOW. HOnestly though, I think that anyone could do it. Surely there's some student who needs a higher grade that could test it? MWAHAHAHAHA

I'm afraid I'm with [livejournal.com profile] maubast: I'd throw them all away and start over. Sorry.

Well, all four loaves are currently sitting in my refrigerator wrapped in foil.

I licked the spoon before I realized what was in the batter, and I haven't turned green or exploded yet.

The thing is, I had a couple of pieces of this bread as made by my friend who is an *excellent* cook... and I didn't actually like it all that much. I just hate throwing it out when so much time and effort and vanilla pudding went into it.
