I took notes during this year's vid contest so I could write up a report. ( Here it is, while it's fresh in my mind! )
Notes on BRB--Summoned by Management:
I decided I wanted to write something in the style of an episode, so the story is all dialogue with a few sound effects. There's no narrative. That was tricky! Especially when you're trying to write h/c and you have to put in clues from which the reader can infer what's going on.
One of the stories I rec'd recently (Homebrew by leiascully) included a line about how Old Woman Josie knows what's really going on in Night Vale, she just isn't telling. That immediately became part of my headcanon. :-)
Lulu is short for Lourdes. Small town in the Southwest, there ought to be some more locals with Hispanic names. IMNSHO. :-)
What really happened with Station Management in this fic has a lot to do with my interpretation of the episode "Subway." ( Spoilers for Subway )

Documentary: We Are Wizards
Mar. 29th, 2011 09:14 pmAnother film I rented with an Amazon video certificate that came with something I bought. The movie was primarily about Harry Potter fan culture, and a substantial amount of it had to do with Wizard Rock.( a mixed bag )
Alice vis-a-vis Tin Man
Dec. 8th, 2009 11:19 amComparisons may be odious, but they are also irresistible. Brief thoughts on the fanfic potential of the two series. ( spoilers ahoy! )
The Reverse of the Medal: Thinky Thoughts
Dec. 5th, 2009 10:57 pmThoughts about the 11th book in the Aubrey-Maturin series, which I just finished rereading earlier today. VERY SPOILERY! Do not click if you haven't read the book; this will spoil the finest moment in the entire series (IMHO). ( You have been warned! )
We got Tales of the Black Freighter from Netflix and the sleeve said it was an hour and forty minutes. TODS, who has read The Watchmen (the story of the Black Freighter is a comic book that someone reads within the novel, that reflects the main plot and themes in interesting ways), was wondering how they were going to make it that long. Well, they didn't! It was twenty-some minutes long; the IMDB says 26 but I think it was actually more like 21. It was very well done, not for the squeamish, and it really did add to my enjoyment of The Watchmen to talk with TODS about how different characters in the Watchmen echo the events of the Black Freighter. The disc also comes with a twenty-five-minute quasi-animated comic book version of the first part of the Watchmen and a sort of mockumentary interview about the first Nite Owl's autobiography, Under the Hood. Really some nifty meta-media. There was also a documentary about an upcoming movie on the Green Lantern.
The Cooler was another free movie from Jaman. It was touching, funny, frightening, sweet, cynical - all by turns. Very enjoyable. Plus we got to see William Macy's butt (and an awful lot of Maria Bello). Maria Bello was really good in this (she was the ersatz Evelyn O'Connell in the third Mummy movie); so were William Macy and Alec Baldwin. Like Finding Amanda, it took place in Las Vegas, but we enjoyed it so much more. The characters were older and more world-weary, and their relationships, adventures, and outcomes were generally very satisfying.

Movie: Time of the Wolf (TODS-only)
May. 30th, 2009 11:13 amTime of the Wolf (Le Temps du Loup) was another online Netflix movie for TODS. He described it as a post-apocalyptic fusion of Hobbes' Leviathan and Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Long, bleak, and oppressive, with some merit for those who wish to reflect on the state of nature thought experiment or the nausea induced by the loss of the conventions on which depends the meaningfulness of life's experiences.
Website revamped!
Sep. 25th, 2008 10:04 amThanks so much to everyone for their input! I did go ahead and revamp the website, although of course it can still be revised if anyone raises a new issue I hadn't thought of. If folks would go look at it and give me their opinion, I'd be everlastingly grateful.
I now have three categories:
Slash
Gen, emphasis on Cain-Glitch friendship, can be read as slashy or not
Gen, other
I put "Au Revoir" (the Lav/Ahamo piece) under Gen, and "Complications" (Cain and Glitch as either an old married couple or old friends) under "Gen, Cain-Glitch."
I also added word counts, just because I like to know how much I'm getting into when I start reading a piece.

Informal poll! Categorizing fanfic
Sep. 23rd, 2008 08:22 pmI've been posting my fics on my own website, Flammantia Moenia Mundi for some time now. I know that most people read the fics on my LJ, but I'm going to a convention and as long as I'm pimping, it would be easier to give out the website than to ask people to dig through my tags.
Tin Man is the first fandom in which I've written a significant amount of gen under the name Amedia; the gen TM stories are the only gen stories on the site. But right now the stories are categorized only by length: Stories (anything over 1000 words), Short-shorts, and Drabbles, to be precise.
I'm wondering whether I should separate out the gen pieces into their own category, so people who don't like slash can enjoy them more easily?
Part of the problem is that some of the stories, such as "Sipping Coffee" or "Continuity," could be read as gen but are still relationship-intensive and could also be read as pre-slash. If I put them in the gen category, then slashers who don't read gen would miss them, and I got feedback indicating that slashers did in fact enjoy them. On the other hand, "Complications" was supposed to be slash, but it was high praise indeed when a dedicated nonslasher read it as gen and enjoyed it that way, so I'm not sure what to do with that!
I suppose I could have three categories:
Slash
Shippy Gen
Indubitably Gen
And there's one heteroromantic story "Au Revoir" (Lavender Eyes/Ahamo). Back when I was young and dinosaurs roamed the earth, I could have put that in the gen category. Can I still?
Or should I just leave the site the way it is?
Recommendations, discussion, brickbats, mobats, all welcome!

5 Things About Tin Man (meme)
Jul. 2nd, 2008 01:37 pmGacked from
kseda and
verilyverity:
Post to your LJ with a list of five (or more) items of Tin Man personal canon. This can be anything from plothole-filling to character backstory to what you really, really, REALLY think happens after the credits roll.

Non-fic rec - Joey & Chandler!

*Actually, knowing those of you on my flist, you probably aren't wondering about that; your answers might range from, "Well, duh, they are SO doing it!" to "There goes Amedia again (*patient sigh*)." But read it anyway! It's really excellent.

Movie: The Legend of Bagger Vance
Jun. 22nd, 2008 02:33 pmWe rented this ages ago, didn't have time to watch it, and dubbed it off onto a couple of tapes (which tells you how long ago it was!). Finally got around to watching it.
