This was the opposite of Sholay for me, in the sense that Sholay was a classic movie I'd never heard of that I absolutely loved. I'd heard of Vertigo for years; it's supposed to be one of the best movies evar, great masterpiece, etc., etc. Didn't like it. Didn't like the characters, didn't like the plot. Okay, I did like the music. :-)

I was okay until halfway through... when it got long, drawn-out, boring and just plain creepy in a bad way.

I HATED the characters! Woo, glad I wasn't the only one!

Now go watch Rope. Full of underlying sexual tension of the totally homoerotic variety! Plus, so underrated. *pets*

Bernard Herrmann was a brilliant film composer. If you want to hear a masterful score cue, listen to the opening of "North By Northwest".

This film was enormously creepy to me. Jimmy Stewart did a great job of playing a sexual predator.

Hitchcock had the moxie to make a sordid film. I think in some ways he was the precursor to Tarantino. Both of them have great command of film techniques coupled with an even deeper understanding of how to push limits outside the envelope and have their work be acclaimed.

Oh yeah! Massive agreement, here. I think Stewart's wholesome persona really worked for him and he undercut it very well. Hitchcock had great actors but even more, he knew how to use them. I'm always on the edge of my seat watching a Hitchcock film, completely lost in the story. That is a hard state for me to get in with a film. My inner skeptic is very strong, but Hitchcock can overcome that (and so can Tarantino.)
