[livejournal.com profile] meritahut recommended this to me a while back and I'm very glad to have finally read it. It's a very thinky book that absolutely oozes love of the written word like nothing I've read since Parnassus on Wheels, plus it has a very philosophically interesting premise and characters I could connect with.
I read it in bits and pieces over the course of several weeks, so I had the vague impression that it reminded me of OldSkool Doctor Who - like Genesis of the Daleks, where the characters seem to spend half their time being rescued, recaptured, and escaping again through the same foggy quarry - but if I read the whole thing straight through it might have had a greater sense of organic unity. Very much enjoyed, anyway.

....when I found a copy in a library where I was to teach a class. Wanted to finish it, but it was about the time the movie came out, so the library was out of copies. I think I'll go and see if it's available now. It was a good read, and a good texture of language....

good texture of language

Wonderful way of putting it! I do recommend going and seeing if the library has it now.

I liked this book very much. However, the sequel was terrible and ruined everything. I have not read the third in the trilogy because I was too broken hearted after the second one. Maybe the third one fixes things, but I don't even care. The first one I really loved, though.
