I had marked the VIDS VIDS VIDS panel as a must-see and I'm so glad I did!!! Airawyn coordinated recommendations from Escapade attendees ahead of time and put together a great selection of vids in terms of time (older and newer vids) and space (Western and Asian fandoms) and feels (deeply sad, laugh-out-loud, and many things in between).

Here are my thoughts during and immediately after the vid show (this means I've only seen most of the vids once). I would love to hear what other people think! You can rewatch the show at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLNvGrcE4GGuiRTXMXHhpQQRYezqosQEHe

I would love to hear comments from anyone else who watched/watches the show, and I hope those of you who are familiar with Smallville, Ted Lasso, Fly Away Home, Beyond Evil, or Love is in the Air can offer more informed perspectives on those vids in particular.

I missed a chunk of the MCU vid "Hey Ho" by Thuvia Ptarth when my Internet cut out - will have to go back and rewatch. From what I saw, it blended a deceptively light, dark-themed song with illustrative clips, and was extremely well cut. It also struck me as thinky; this wasn't just about the minimizing of the horrors of war in a fictional universe, but could also serve as commentary on the world we live in.

"Hey Ho" was followed by a multi vid called "Dance Apocalyptic" by eruthros and thingswithwings; it was upbeat, energetic, and super dark, and I loved it. The way the movie/tv clips and the lyrics and the flavor of the song all played both with and against one another made it sizzle in my brain--and also made me want to get up and dance! The source texts ranged from Lang's Metropolis to a Janelle Monae music video (“Tightrope,” I think), and many sources in between. It also got me thinking meta thoughts about how many popular media products feature dystopian or post-apocalyptic futures, and what that says about the industry and the audience.

The next one, "Masters of War," was the first one I'd seen before. A multi vid by Bisexual Alien Nerds, set to a sorrowful folksong from a female perspective, using clips that were spot on, it made for bitter social commentary, and the fact that it was well done just made it even more painful. I find it hard to watch, but it has important things to say.

After three dark-themed (though excellent) vids, it was refreshing to watch "Stamina" by runawaynun, a celebration of women's sports. It was inspiring and uplifting, and I enjoyed it a lot.

"Closer to Me" by alwaystheocean was based on the movie Fly Away Home, which I'd never seen or heard of. Thanks to the video, I'd now be interested in seeing it! The vid made it easy to follow a basic storyline about a girl who wanted to fly, and also loved the geese on her farm, and was also dealing with growing up. The scenes of her flying some sort of little plane while the geese flew along with her were marvelous, and thanks to the construction of the vid, clearly a triumph.

The Untamed vid by vailkagamito, "Nothing in this World I Wouldn't Do" was new to me, and I was very glad to have a chance to see it. The theme of brothers and sisters brought out a number of parallels and contrasts, some of them very touching, others sinister. I think it was brilliant to include the brotherhood ceremony with Jin Guangyao, Nie Mingue, and Lan Xichen, since that expanded and darkened the brotherly relationships. I also enjoyed the montage of younger siblings from various flashbacks, as well as the use of clips from Fatal Journey to expand the Nie brothers' interactions. So well done!

The Untamed vid might have made me sniffle a bit, but the next one--a tribute to Carrie Fisher--got me right in the feels. "Carrie and Gary--A Better Son Daughter" by eruthros foregrounded Ms. Fisher's struggles with mental health as well as her feistiness and generosity in publicizing her story and supporting those with similar issues. There was a lot else to the video, and I suspect the viewer will find more to love in every rewatch.

"I'm a Ruler [Han Joo Won x Lee Dong Sik]" by Victoria was a vid for the K-Drama Beyond Evil, which I haven't seen, and I'm still on the fence about, but the vid made the central relationship look soooo interesting!

Sisabet's Clex vid to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" included interpolated panels from comic book and animated tv interactions between Superman and Lex Luthor, adding hilarious perspective to the "love and revenge" theme of the song, while still keeping the focus firmly on Smallville. I've seen a lot of SV vids, but not this one, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I enjoy seeing works that are definitely transformative videos made by fans, but are adjacent to the kind of fanvids that come from the corner of media fandom that I inhabit, so I was tickled to see the LOTR mashup "They're Taking the Hobbits to Isengard!" by rwin Beekveld included in the show. And I was glad to see it again! Sort of flaked-and-formed, with lots of repeated clips, partly using the original sound (especially for dialogue) and partly using alternate sound, such as a sped-up synthy version of the Fellowship theme music. Nonsensical fun!

"Tankhun--Boss B*tch" by drinkingwith_cupid featured a secondary character from KinnPorsche who brought the genderbending fashionista flair to the party! I liked how the vid played against the typical focus of KinnPorsche on serious questions of family, loyalty, and romance-amid-danger, but instead collected Tankhun's moments to showcase the fun!

The vid "[Phayu x Rain] Shameless" by Sophie Grant made it clear that the Thai drama Love in the Air is definitely a BL - lots of very sexy kissing and rolling around in bed. A great pimping vid--I immediately added the show to my Viki playlist.

The Ted Lasso vid "Welcome Home" by AlyB1223 appeared to focus on one of the players and his character arc. I've never seen the show, so I can't say more!

The crowd-pleasing closer was the classic Starsky & Hutch vid "Still the One" by Raynebow68. It had been so long since I saw it that I had forgotten the twist early in the vid, so I was delightfully surprised all over again. Lighthearted, but also sweet, romantic, and sexy.
