Here's my report for the fantastic vid show at the virtual Escapade 33.5. I kept a window open and typed up notes while the show was running. A lot of it is still more notes than sentences, but I hope it all makes sense! An asterisk means that the vid premiered at this vid show.

You can watch the vid show online at: https://vimeo.com/showcase/10584452

Certain vids, including all premiering vids, were discussed the next day at the Vid Review Panel; the abbreviation VRP introduces comments that were made by various participants when the vid was discussed and shared here with permission. All other comments are my own.

1. Boomerang* - Witcher - Aaronantium fun, upbeat song, lots of quick cuts, well-chosen
Aw, Jaskier can't seem to stay away from Geralt and feels some kind of way about it. Overall humorous. I liked how in one chorus, the repeat of "down" was done with downward gestures; in another, it was Jaskier sitting on the ground.

VRP: Great "woo!" beginning - love the music, good word-matching to mouth-movements - The vidder tackled something hard to do, that is, getting the clips to work with a fast song--which is difficult because of the way that The Witcher is filmed--and it wound up being very well done.

2. Gay Pirates - OFMD - Kirbyrules - Aargh, diegetic dialogue over the song lyrics (a bugaboo of mine). Sweet/funny/gruesome and catchy song with a sea-shanty flavor, with vid leaning toward sweet.

3. The Real Thing - Old Guard - alba17 - begins with focus on Charlize Theron's character and her BAMFness with action scenes as well as quieter moments. It might have been slashy between her and the new character? We also see the new character proving herself.

4. Love Will Keep Us Together* - Tatort Berlin - Kerguelen - The song was a nostalgic delight for me and I enjoyed bouncing along in my seat! The first "Stop! Cause I really love you" is just magic with the editing, and subsequent repeats of the line find different ways to emphasize the "Stop!" in entertaining ways. I also loved how the vidder used scenes involving handcuffs for the lines "you belong to me now/ain't gonna set you free now." The two detectives dancing together for the instrumental bridge is lovely. They clearly have no sense of personal space and the vid showcases that beautifully from big expressive hugs to gentle moments together.

VRP: Interesting parallel to Witcher vid "this is the height difference that the Witcher wishes it had" (one of the detectives is much shorter than the other) - playful interpretation of the song rather than literal line-by-line - the way one of the characters flings himself into the other's arms more than once reminded people of the phrase "climb him like a tree."

5. Strangelove* - The Sentinel - Vielmouse - ooh, lots of interesting effects - initially faces in a circle in the center of the screen while the background panned over a night cityscape; then flashlight circles, then Jim kissing various women and posterizing bright red while Blair finds out. The color changes, overlapping images, and other effects make it dreamy and as the title says, strange. It's a wonderfully slashy way to use these blatantly het scenes. It ends with their faces in the circle again but this time the two of them together.

VRP: Very moody - more emotional than intellectual vid, playing into the sound of the song, color work impressive, nice to see someone take a source that isn't amazing-looking and do something more modern with it, different from traditional vids for this fandom. I also learned from some of the people at the panel that the original broadcast of Sentinel enabled viewers to experience its deliberately oversaturated, vibrant colors, but that the colors were toned down for dvd. Since the online versions are ripped from the DVD, people who recently discovered it get the impression that it has that dull straight-to-syndication 90s look, when it didn't really.

6. And So it Goes* - DW (10) - Kandy Fong - A HET VID! Sarah Jane for "lovers past" and Rose for "new ones" - and for "the rose," - slow, bittersweet, tender.Happy ending for Rose but not for Ten.

VRP: Did the melancholy very well; there has to be one het vid every 100 or so, lol; made people cry. Nostalgia is important in fandom. The ending worked for people who hadn't seen the episode it was based on.

7. Don't Blame Me* - Nv Er Hong - AurumCalendula - girlslash, yum. Intriguing imagery, made me curious about the show. The song feels like it fits beautifully with a strange and beautiful love/hate relationship.

VRP: Someone pointed out that the song has a female singer using female pronouns to describe her lover, yay. SO PRETTY. Beautiful visual movement, cutting to internal movement. Fabric movement, too. Tightening into the hand montage, lovely. Very effective pimping.

There was also a brief discussion of how people used to complain if there was "too much" femslash - times have moved on - also, this vid is more like m/m slash with equal opportunity stabbing, dramatic relationship; it's not just soft and gentle pretty ladies. "Horny and violent, we are here for it!"

8. Soldiers - Pros - kat-byrd - I like this song for them; it's a grim yet realistic and rousing take on the dangers of Bodie and Doyle's work. We see them running, shooting, bleeding. It did not strike me as slashy, although the camaraderie of soldiers is clearly emphasized in the repeated lines about standing shoulder to shoulder.

9. Party in Ancient China - Heaven Official's Blessing - Diana Williams
- too much fun! Great recontextualization to make even zombie battles fun. Yay!!!

10. Time in a Bottle - Good Omens - Kandy Fong - romantic vid from Crowley's POV. The foregrounding of bottles and the characters drinking echoed the title. I kept thinking there was something else about it that I wanted to note, and finally pinned it down; it had to do with a paratextual property of the song. When I first heard "Time in a Bottle" in 1973, the artist who sang it (Jim Croce) had recently died in a plane crash, which gave the song deeply sad overtones for lyrics such as "there never seems to be enough time" and "you're the one I want to go through time with." But given that Azirophale and Crowley are immortal beings, these lines take on a new and more optimistic meaning, and the line "till eternity passes away" becomes literal rather than figurative. Most vids recontextualize the video clips; this one actually recontextualizes the song! Very cool.

VRP: Melancholy mood set by song choice - liked it for this series. The opening with the puppets for the instrumental intro was impressive - the vidder shared that she had had to slow down the clips considerably. One viewer commented, "The song brought the angst and the vid brought the hot."

11. Tough to be a Dreamer - Arcane - Lenle G - I've only seen part of Arcane, but this seemed to fit Viktor's character arc very well, as well as showcasing both the terror and the beauty of pushing science beyond reasonable limits.

12. Fast Car - Little Women (K-Drama) - sandalwoodbox - This looked very dramatic and a little puzzling; it seemed to focus on the friendship between two girls. I'd love to hear about it from someone familiar with the fandom.

13. Enemy - Sandman - Margaret Swift - I liked the song a lot - wish it had the nearly-incomprehensible lyrics subtitled - eerie flavor seems to fit the universe well - lots of diegetic dialogue over the lyrics that I found enigmatic rather than clarifying.

VRP: This was cited as an example where including dialogue made the vid almost unintelligible - the actors mumble and the song, while interesting, was hard to understand - it reminded one vidder of accidental sound overlap in VCR vidding if you didn't strip the original audio.

14. London Boy - Red White & Royal Blue - LOADS of diegetic dialogue over the lyrics. Lots of boykissing!!! LOTS. Seemed to retell the story of the movie from enemies to lovers.

VRP: After we had discussed a number of particular vids, the panel was opened up for more general comments, and I apologized in advance for throwing a hand grenade into the discussion: but I wanted to know people's reactions to the use of dialogue over song lyrics. Fortunately, the topic was well-received! This vid in particular was noted for putting crucial lines of dialogue over important lyrics of the song. Part of the problem for this vid, where the story arc was pretty obvious, was not trusting the audience - we don't NEED the dialogue - we can use their expressions, the looks between them, and the touching to track the arc of the relationship. The song was well-chosen, not super well known, it's "stepping on yourself" to put dialogue over the interesting lines so the audience can't follow them.

15. Dog Days Are Over - Guardians of the Galaxy - Kat - Begins with voiceover by Rocket - continues with lots of scenes - I haven't seen the latest movie so I couldn't follow all of them. Rocket looked so sad! It seemed angsty overall - not sure.

VRP: I learned from other viewers that this vid was a brilliant character study of Rocket.

16. Cornflake Girl (cover by Florence and the Machine) - Mystere de la Tour Eiffel - AurumCalendula - 19th century mystery? crime drama? Some really surprising moments. The blonde white woman and the elegant black woman had gorgeous erotic chemistry.

17. The City - The Sentinel - Vielmouse - begins mostly black and white, more special effects, including overlapping pictures, mirroring, tiny flashes of color (e.g. just the eyes). Looks like it might be based on an episode I don't remember seeing (one of Jim's Peruvian friends comes to Cascade?). I liked the industrial sound of the song as it went with the emphasis on the city and structures like roofs and stairwells. Flashes into color toward the end - couldn't figure out quite why. Hey, was that Jim's butt??? Or did the SFX make it easier to interpolate outside material? The way that images of the city were projected onto Jim's body in a number of clips suggested a strong connection between Jim and Cascade; I really liked this use of the SFX to suggest a theme.

18. Hutch is Fine (No, He's Not) to "Dragostea Din Tei" (a.k.a. the Numa Numa Song) - Starksy & Hutch - hardboiledbaby - begins with the vidder basically talking to us, and segues to being very clever and amusing with the subtitles for the song mixed with goofy imaginary dialogue - until the vid finally succumbs to the sorrowful conclusion of the song, alas! But still with a twinge of humor as Hutch is clearly NOT FINE.

VRP: People really loved the wry humor of "No, He's Not"!

19. W.I.T.C.H. - The Wheel of Time - sandalwoodbox - character study, I would guess of a powerful woman. Ooh, canon girlkissing!!!

VRP: All I have in my notes is the comment, referring to the character featured in the vid, "She's bad and does violent things so I am into that!"

20. All for Love - Mag 7 (TV) - hardboiledbaby - begins with brief rundown of the characters, showing how the characters are stand-up guys for the people who need them, including each other. ♥ It's like a big group hug! OT7! Concludes with the Seven riding out all together.

21. Bunny Love to "Muskrat Love" - The Untamed - Diana Williams - Supposed to be a Lord King Bad vid, but so adorable! The bunny cutouts and the pink heart designs highlight the characters & add to the cuteness. Near the end, a bit of doujinshi artwork of WangXian actually kissing helps make up for the restrained bromance of the series.

VRP: The vidder shared with us that she "wanted to take out the muskrats having sex" (that is, remove those background sounds from the original song); she wound up settling for making it softer instead. She also recommended a very helpful sound editing site called https://vocalremover.org.

22. Ekko Inni Meg* - Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady - Aaronantium - incomprehensible song, so it was rather like an instrumental. Two girls in love? Two girls who seem to be badass fighters and rather fond of each other. Love the speedy cuts when the song speeds up. Gorgeous visuals and the two girls are enchanting. Def made me curious about the show.

VRP: We had questions for Aaron, who shared with us that the song is in Norwegian, and that Norwegian pop (in general, upbeat European pop) and Japanese anime mesh surprisingly well. The shimmering rainbow effect in a couple of clips was added by Aaron to echo what was done with the voice during those lines. The femslash is canon! High energy song and canon.

23. The Brave - My Country: The New Age - nu__breed - I've heard of the series but haven't seen it. Lots of fighting and angst. Historical costumes, handsome dudes.

24. Pretty Please - Killjoys - AurumCalendula - girls kissing! Very pretty.

25. What a Wonderful World - Nimona - Kat - begins with a long excerpt including dialogue - we get only a little of the wonderful world song before we transition into another section with an instrumental and the characters ... older? In the modern world? In a futuristic world? Returns briefly to song when the main character embraces a man in armor (I got more friendship vibes than romantic vibes from the scene). Then we get dialogue and instrumental music again.

VRP: Regarding the use of dialogue, this vid was cited as an example of how to do it right; the dialogue didn't interfere with the lyrics of the song, and made the vid easier to understand for people unfamiliar with the canon.

26. I Know You Really Want Me ... Probably* to "Juliet" (LMNT) - Ultimate Note - Franzeska
- Asian drama set in modern times - Clearly there's a bad boy and a cleancut guy who are going to become friends or more. Fun vid, looks like interesting show! Oh lord, I think they just wrecked a priceless archaeological site. Nonetheless, looks fun.

VRP: The source, Ultimate Note, is part of the Lost Tomb franchise. There was a time when this was a VERY VERRRRRY overvidded song - says the vidder! Viewers agreed that the vid featured great internal movement to the music/lyrics, the song is now nostalgic, def a recruiter vid, the boys are so cute! The vidder also explained that these were secondary characters who do their own things on the side (the main characters aren't in the vid). The slash is not canon but the fandom is full of slashers, which influenced this subplot.

27. Game Night in Space - Multi - Garrideb - OH I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. Great choice of song, lively and upbeat, and games being played across many iterations of Star Trek and other scifi, such as Lost in Space, Doctor Who, and many more. Wheee! Original and reboot BSG, B7, Old Skool & Nu Who, w00t! Great transitions like old to new BSG parallels, Chewie with the chess set on the Millenium Falcon in A New Hope and in the final trilogy, and a perfect conclusion with Picard dealing cards in the series finale of TNG. *applauds* I had seen it once before at the vidders' chat, and I hadn't noticed then--but did notice, upon rewatching--that there are tons of great subtle details and parallel gestures, movements, and ideas to be uncovered. Just to name one: on the line, "gonna make a supersonic man out of you," the clip focuses on Starbuck, as played by Dirk Benedict in the original Battlestar Galactica; on the later line, "gonna make a supersonic woman of you," the clip focuses on Starbuck, as played by Katee Sackhoff in the reboot Battlestar Galactica! I'm not going to list the other clever moments I found because that's a big part of the fun--I encourage you to go watch it for yourself!

VRP: This vid made a great ending for the vid show, sent us out with a smile on our face. There was praise for all the interpretations of chess especially, and the inclusion of not just new and old BSG, but even Galactica 1980, was warmly appreciated. We also learned that it was the only multi vid submitted.

Haha, Deadpool (from the first movie) chasing us out at the end. Great collection!!!

VRP: People shared how much they enjoyed the pacing of the vid show, and feochadn, who organized it, spoke about the important factors to be aware of, comparing the overall result to a concept album or a story, which I found fascinating!

One of the interesting elements of the discussion had to do with the culture in which vids arise. One of the people there who recruits vids for the vid shows commented that "YouTube vidders" - that is, vidders who are embedded in the culture of vids posted on YouTube and are chiefly influenced by other YouTube vidders - think it's *obligatory* to include dialogue within the vid. Most vidders within the culture of media fandom represented by in-person conventions like Escapade prefer minimal dialogue, and a few object even to dialogue at the beginning or at the end or during an instrumental break.

I'd noticed that! I remember the complaints back in the day about the use of any dialogue at all, but like you, I haven't heard that much lately. And Youtube vids are definitely using dialogue a lot more than anything I've seen elsewhere! Chinese vids, too - I've mostly seen them on Youtube, but also Bilibili. (One reason may be that there seem to be a lot more constructed reality vids in Chinese vidding, which I think is brilliant because I love that genre!)

we had quite an age range at the panel, including Kandy Fong, the inventor of fanvids (who is in her early 70s) and Aaronantium, who runs free classes on learning to computer-vid (just turned 21)

Oh, that's fabulous!

but in my experience gender-mapping is a line that vidders, despite their subversive nature, very rarely cross. Kandy shared with me that in earlier days, there was even a "rule" that the singer's gender needed to match the gender of the POV character, although this rule faded relatively early.

Huh, interesting! Come to think of it, about the voices, I've sometimes seen vids where the song was - idk what's the correct term, I know zero about music - digitally processed to sound deeper or higher depending on the gender of the POV character; I wonder how the ease of manipulating the source these days affects the genre standards ...
