[livejournal.com profile] keikokin wrote me a story for my birthday - a Barney Miller double-drabble! With Harris! And Dietrich! Sexy and sweet and funny - I love it!

Her lj is flocked, but she uses a fic archive somewhere - I'll ask where she's putting this one up and let y'all know the URL as soon as I can!

In the meantime, color me pink 'cause I am tickled!

(I'm also 45. Cool!)

This is great: http://community.livejournal.com/sixlittlewords, started by the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] gblvr. There have already been some amazing posts!

Here's my first set of contributions, btw:

Harris and Dietrich? So doing it.

Spock only pretends to dislike McCoy.

McCoy has a pointed ear fetish.

Legolas watches Gimli when he sleeps.

Gimli dreams about elves and starlight.

Rats heat up warm desert nights.

Not only jeeps are jump-started.

Keikokin is selling some SG-1 and multi slash zines in a mini-auction. There are details on the zines in the comments thread. If you're looking for some very hot RP slash, check out Diverse Doings 10 - highly recommended! DD 8 and 10 also have Barney Miller stories by Python, nicely edited by Agel.

... in a sauna!!!!

Hubby was flipping and spotted SL on That '70s Show. Yay for flipping! And yay for TiVo - we were able to snag it, upload to the 'puter, and screencap.

check it out! )

Here's [livejournal.com profile] settiai's prompt:
Dietrich & Harris, an arrest gone wrong.

And here's my response. )

What a cool exercise!

I actually wrote two responses to [livejournal.com profile] keikokin's challenge, one slash, one gen. Well, sort of gen.

These are quick-and-dirty (not that I'm promising NC-17 or anything) and may very well wind up being rewritten and incorporated into something longer.

I'll try to get to the others in the next few days.

Here's the prompt:

"You know how to make Eggs Benedict? I'm impressed."

"Not as impressed as I was last night."

I stole this from [livejournal.com profile] settiai, just so's you know. It seems like an awfully good way to prime the pump.

Give me a fandom I write in and a topic suggestion, just a couple of words or a phrase, and I'll turn out a short piece in a few days.

Here are fandoms I write in:

Rat Patrol, Barney Miller, Star Trek:TOS, Friends, Emergency!, Wild Wild West, Man from U.N.C.L.E., the Prisoner.

It's not a complete list, and there are fandoms I'm familiar with that I haven't written in, so if you want to suggest one that's not on the list, go ahead.

Remember the episode in which Harris is advised by a man from the future to stop investing in gold and invest in zinc?

AOL just ran an article how the government is losing money by minting pennies (it costs 1.4 cents to make a one-cent piece). Here's an excerpt (emphasis mine):

Appearances aside, pennies no longer contain much copper. In the middle of 1982, after copper prices rose to record levels, the mint starting making pennies that consist mostly of zinc, with just a thin copper coating.

But these days, zinc is newly popular. Rising industrial demand and speculation have sent the price rocketing. Since the end of 2003, zinc prices have tripled. Gold, by contrast, is up only about 50 percent.

Top Ten Signs you're reading a story by Amedia:

10. The story may contain arcane cultural references.
9. If it's more than two pages long, it's been edited to a fare-thee-well by The Live-In Beta Reader and probably rewritten multiple times.
8. The characters never, ever use the word "relationship," even in thoughts. Because, you know, they're guys.
7. All the sex is offscreen. Well, almost.
6. The tone of the story matches the original as closely as possible; when possible, so do the setting, dialogue, and even the plot.
5. The characters in the pairing do a lot of dancing around each other before they get to down to anything romantic.
4. Characters don't admit they love each other until the third or fourth story, even if they have sex in the first one.
3. It's in a teeny fandom with readership in the dozens, or a larger fandom where most people prefer another pairing.
2. If it's in Rat Patrol, you haven't seen it unless you read fanzines.

And the number one sign you're reading a story by Amedia:

1. It usually contains a Dietrich, but not always the *same* Dietrich.

Sometime in December 2005 - I can get the exact date if it matters - Entertainment Tonight covered a Barney Miller reunion. I thought I taped it. :-(

Instead, I taped an hour of It's a Wonderful Life! AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Nobody on the Barney Miller yahoo list seems to have it, either.

Anybody got it? Willing to copy it? Will gratefully reimburse/swap/whatever. Heck, I'll write you Levitt/Scanlon fic if that's what you want (or promise *never* to).

From a recent interview:

Q: "Firefly" is now a cult classic.

A: It's because there are so many bright, intelligent, warm, savvy people out there.

Actually I've loved all of [livejournal.com profile] meritahut's entries in graphic form, but this one is for the few, the proud, the insane: the Harris/Dietrich slashers:

[p.s. this is not her usual drawing style]

These had me laughing all the way home. Remember that one must add the words "in bed" to the end of each fortune:

"An hour with friends is worth more than ten with strangers."

"You have the ability to adapt to diverse situations."

Oh, and a GIP. Because while I think Ron Glass has improved with age, rather like Sean Connery, he did manage to look good in 1970's fashion - not an easy task!
amedia: (Christmas snark)
Does anyone have any of the Barney Miller Christmas episodes on tape? I have two of them, both from TV Land - one of them (I forget the name - the one with Yemana and the prostitute) is okay, the other one ("Toys") is very glitchy - lots of skips and dropouts. I know I'm missing at least one other one.

If someone has "Toys" and any eps I'm missing, or an uncut version of the one I do have, and is willing to make copies, I'm willing to swap music videos (I have a rather large collection), anything else on tape that I have that you might want, or cold hard cash...

Does anybody else want a copy of the Harris/Dietrich pimping tape? Email me privately with your address at flankingm @ aol.com - the original is still sitting in the top bay of the Go-Video, so I may as well run a few more off before I put it away.

I stumbled across this column called "Things to Come" on the web; the author, Greg McElhatton, previews upcoming comic book publications:

MOONSTONE BOOKS KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER TP VOL 1
JUL04 3022, p304, $17.95

All right, I'll bite. Are there really KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER fans out there who are buying this? Is there some huge fan base for this character that I've never known about? Don't get me wrong, I know there's an award given out for "Best Barney Miller Slash Fiction" every year, so stranger things certainly exist, but I don't know, I just can't see how Moonstone is making back the money on the license here, to say nothing of the printing bill. Who's buying this? Is there an audience? What's going on? Anyone?

(I am not making up the Barney Miller slash fiction award, incidentally. I'm not sure which part surprised me more, that there was an award or that there's enough Barney Miller slash fiction still being written every year that it can be a viable category in fan-fiction awards.)

I really ought to write to the poor guy and explain that the award was only given once, because the only year (so far) that there have been enough Barney Miller stories in printzines to have a category was 2002; hence there was an award given out in 2003 (the awards are given the year after the stories are published). There was a Barney Miller story on the ballet the previous year, but it received an Honorable Mention, which is what the Fan Q's do if a story receives enough nominations to be on the ballot but there aren't enough stories to make a category.

At any rate, though, I'm tickled pink by the mention. Does this mean our tiny corner of fandom has Made The Big Time???!!!

Please check 'em out and make sure they work (yes, a cheap ploy to get you to read them and Be Converted To The Harris/Dietrich LOVE BECAUSE IT IS INEVITABLE AND THEY ARE SO DOING IT SQUEEE!!!!)

Ahem.

Anyway, here they are:

amedia: Curlicue of butterflies on black background (snark)
In the past, I've been paranoid about posting fic to the 'Net, but what I've put up so far hasn't gotten me into trouble, so I'm starting to relax. I'm considering putting all of my Barney Miller stories up on my fanfic website (http://fanfic.tv/amedia), partly to make them more accessible, partly in attempt to do something to kickstart myself into writing again.

All the stories appeared more than two years ago in various printzines, so it's been long enough. What do y'all think?
amedia: Close up on young man looking at the camera (Kookie from 77 Sunset Strip). Caption: wanna play ... boy detective? (kookie)
First of all, the icon was inspired by the same episode ("Secret Island") of 77 Sunset Strip that inspired an earlier post on the general theme of "slash is everywhere." Plus the picture was just too pretty to resist.

Second, a dear friend of mine, Keikokin, has begun writing copious and delightful Harry/Draco stories. ETA: They can be found here: http://www.adultfanfic.net Hubby and I were away earlier this week and she kindly gave our son a ride to and from school. Now, he knows what slash is and he's read the Very Secret Diaries, but I was still surprised to learn that not only did my friend tell him she was writing Harry/Draco, but he thought it was great and has been GIVING HER STORY SUGGESTIONS! Engorgement charms gone awry, magically invisible underwear... my innocent darling!

What could a mother do??? What else! He hadn't read any actual stories yet - so I gave him a copy of In Flamingo Delicto, the story I wrote for the ZebraCon writing contest. ) He pronounced it "demented," which if I understand him correctly is high praise indeed. :-)

I have often seen discussed the question of the correct age to introduce one's children to slash. In this case, it was seventeen and a half. This is not, however, intended to reflect in any way on other people's decisions about their own children, all of whom mature differently with respect to different issues.
